Artist Statement – Freedom

Freedom rises from rust and steel, a figure forged from fragments of labor and industry: a chain held high in uplifted arms, a car part for a head, a heavy bolt at its side. It’s body exhales, as if releasing centuries of struggle into the open air.

The chain, once a tool of bondage, becomes here an emblem of defiance and liberation. It speaks to the generations of enslaved people whose lives were bound in iron, and to the unbreakable human will that tore those shackles apart. In its weathered surface lies both pain and perseverance, a history of forced labor transformed into a monument of resilience.

Freedom is not smooth or polished—it is rough, imperfect, scarred, yet unmistakably alive. In raising its chain, this figure declares that even from rust and ruin, the spirit to break free and breathe endures.
